What do tourists do to minimize their impact?

We found that several travelers are concerned about following the regulations of the destinations they visit.

At Cancollona, we asked our traveling community through our Instagram account about their actions when traveling to a destination, and this is what they told us: 36% of tourists said they take measures to minimize their impact by choosing sustainable transportation options. This attitude reflects a growing awareness of the impact of transportation on the ecological footprint of travel.

Let’s remember that on average, a domestic round-trip flight in economy class on a medium-sized airplane can generate between 0.5 and 2 tons of CO2 per passenger. Meanwhile, an international flight can emit between 2 and 6 tons of CO2 per passenger, depending on the distance and type of aircraft.

Continuing with the survey, 36% said they respect local and environmental regulations, which includes following the guidelines established by destinations to preserve the environment and local culture. This measure surprised us, as it is crucial to ensure that tourism does not affect natural resources or alter local customs.

At the same time, 21% of respondents mentioned that they reduce their use of plastics, an important step in the fight against plastic waste pollution, which is one of the most urgent environmental issues. Let’s remember that globally, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year. This is equivalent to approximately 1.1 million tons daily. In fact, it is estimated that an average American citizen may use around 2.5 kilograms of plastic per week, which is approximately 350 grams per day.

Finally, 7% said they are unsure about the measures to take, which again shows us that there is a latent need for more education and guidance on sustainable practices. The truth is that many tourists are adopting practices to reduce their environmental impact, although there is still work to be done to increase awareness and the implementation of sustainable measures.
