A responsible journey from South Korea: Jae-Hoon’s story and his adventure in Girona
One afternoon, we met Jae-Hoon, a cyclist from South Korea whose story left our group of travelers speechless. His visit to our accommodation, Can Cocollona, was a pleasant surprise, as there aren’t many Koreans staying at the hostel. Jae-Hoon joined us in the patio of Can Coco while we shared a beer. Although he seemed shy at first, he quickly warmed up to the conversation. When we started to delve into his life, he shared a story that provided a valuable lesson to all of us present.
Jae-Hoon had arrived in Girona after an epic bike trip from his home in Seoul. With a backpack full of cycling gear and an adventurous spirit, his goal was clear: to explore Europe in an eco-friendly and conscious way. His choice to travel by bike reflected his commitment to the environment and his desire to promote responsible tourism practices.
“I wanted to show that it’s possible to explore the world responsibly,” he explained. “Traveling by bike not only reduces my carbon footprint, but it also allows me to connect more deeply with the places I visit,” he said.
Jae-Hoon’s journey began in Seoul and took him through Asia and Europe, crossing borders and traversing all kinds of landscapes. Each pedal stroke filled him with pride. He told us he faced several challenges; sometimes he would stop somewhere to rest for several days before continuing on his way. The strangest thing that happened to him was being attacked by a wild boar while on a trail crossing the Asian border.
Throughout his trip, Jae-Hoon stayed in various hostels, and one of them was Can Coco. He mentioned that he only chose hostels that aligned with his life philosophy and way of traveling. For him, Girona was one of the ideal destinations, as a cyclist, he closely followed the recommendations of other professionals. “When I learned that Lans had chosen to live in Girona, I researched the destination and found that there were several interesting routes here,” he said. Jae-Hoon also mentioned that his adventure would continue to Portugal. He had been traveling for months and, instead of looking exhausted, he seemed more vibrant with each passing day.
Jae-Hoon’s story is an inspiring testament to how tourism can be both adventurous and environmentally respectful. His commitment to sustainability and #SlowTravel resonates with our mission at Can Cocollona. We believe that every trip is an opportunity to make a positive difference, and we are delighted to have been part of Jae-Hoon’s adventure.
The next time you consider traveling, remember Jae-Hoon’s story and think about how you can contribute to more responsible tourism. Girona, with its natural beauty and rich history, is the perfect setting for a conscious and meaningful travel experience. And of course, Can Cocollona will always be here to support you in your own sustainable adventure.
