The surroundings of Girona offer a variety of routes for cycling, and here we show you one that is not so well-known.
From CanCocollona, we embarked on an exciting bike adventure on a sunny Sunday afternoon around 4 PM. Facu and I were getting ready to take on a route that, according to him, had the most beautiful trails he had ever seen. Facu is a teacher from Girona who has lived in the city for several years; moreover, he is a local, so he knows the best bike routes. Thanks to CanCoco, I got to meet him and was encouraged to go for a ride, as I often saw many bicycles in the streets but never dared to go alone.
We packed food, water in our backpacks, pumped air into the tires, and set off on our adventure. The good thing is that the city is cyclist-friendly. The route was mostly flat, though with about 30% slight inclines and some challenges that forced us to get off the bikes in certain sections. The route was just as Facu had described it: dreamy.
To get there, you can search on Google Maps, setting Vilablareix, a charming nearby town, as your first stop, and then continue towards Vilobí d’Onyar. By selecting the bicycle option in the app, you’ll get the detailed route. This journey will make you feel as if you’re in a fairy tale, riding through almost magical paths.
During our ride, we made several stops to take photos and videos, extending our journey to about 30 kilometers. Along the way, we crossed rivers, discovered livestock farms, sunflower fields, and marveled at the sunset. The experience was enriched by exploring ancient churches and paths surrounded by fallen leaves, making the ride absolutely delightful.
Facu recommended using the Wikiloc app to find routes, not only for cycling but also for hiking, among other activities. Along the way, I was impressed to find imposing mountains, inactive volcanoes, rivers, and towns with Gothic and medieval architecture. It’s a plan that cycling enthusiasts should explore to train surrounded by the most beautiful landscapes.
Finally, after 2 and a half hours, we decided to stop near Girona for a beer and a sandwich. We were starving, and my back was aching from all the pedaling; after all, if you’re not used to it, long routes aren’t recommended. This time, we covered around 30 kilometers. At the bottom of this blog, you can see the photos. What an amazing route Facu showed me! At least I didn’t leave the city without having cycled at least one route.
This story shows that establishments like Can Cocollona help connect travelers with locals to create a real and authentic connection. Let’s remember that our philosophy promotes #SlowTravel, which invites travelers to immerse themselves deeply in the destination and connect with it instead of hopping from one place to another. This approach is not only beneficial for the environment and the local community but also for a more enriching travel experience.
We hope to see you soon in Girona to take on unique bike routes!
