What Museums Are There in Girona?

Girona has at least six main museums, but the cultural offer is very diverse, and there are always authentic cultural expressions you’ll love to discover.

Lucía and Mar arrived at our hostel on a Saturday night and told us that they wanted to visit as many museums as possible in Girona. The two friends knew that on the first Sunday of every month, almost all museums are free, and that’s why they had come from Barcelona to CanCoco.

The visiting hours for the museums are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., so Lucía and Mar organized themselves very well to try to see most of the museums within 4 hours. However, they themselves mentioned that if the museums turned out to be very interesting, they would probably not be able to visit them all.

Their itinerary included the 7 most popular museums:

  1. Museu de la Ciutat – Museu d’Història de GironaThe Museu de la Ciutat is an essential starting point for understanding the evolution of Girona over the centuries. Located in the former monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, the museum has exhibits on local history, from prehistory to the contemporary era, highlighting its collections of medieval and Renaissance objects, as well as interactive exhibits that allow visitors to explore history in an immersive way.
  2. Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya – Girona (MAC Girona)The Museu d’Arqueologia houses an extensive collection of archaeological artifacts dating from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Located in the former building of the Institute of Girona, the museum features exceptional pieces of pottery and tools that provide a detailed insight into the ancient civilizations that inhabited the region.
  3. Museu del CinemaThe Museu del Cinema offers a fascinating look at the evolution of the seventh art. Located in the former convent of Sant Joan, the museum has a collection of projection devices and objects related to the history of cinema, from the first projectors to vintage film cameras.
  4. Museu d’Art de GironaThe Museu d’Art de Girona, located in the former monastery of Sant Antoni, has a rich collection that spans from medieval to contemporary art. Among its standout pieces are works by renowned Catalan artists and an impressive series of Gothic altarpieces, which also include modern and contemporary art.
  5. Museu de la Moto de CatalunyaThe Museu de la Moto de Catalunya, located in Bassella, is designed for motorcycle enthusiasts. This museum presents an impressive collection of historic motorcycles that illustrate the evolution of motorcycle design and technology over the years.
  6. Museu d’Història dels JueusThe Museu d’Història dels Jueus explores the life and contributions of the Jews in the city through exhibitions that include historical documents, artifacts, and reconstructions of daily life. It is an important destination for understanding the influence of the Jewish community in Girona’s history.
  7. Refugio Antiaéreo de GironaThe Refugio Antiaéreo de Girona is a must-visit for those interested in contemporary history and World War II. Located beneath Girona’s old town, this underground shelter offers a glimpse into how the city prepared for possible air raids during the war. Visitors can explore the tunnel system and learn about the living conditions and protective measures adopted during that period.

Lucía and Mar told us that they could only visit three of the seven museums they had planned to. The Museu d’Art was the one that caught their attention the most, and they spent most of their time just in that museum. They later realized that their itinerary was too tight to visit all the museums. Even so, they enjoyed their stay, learned more about the city’s history, and decided to return on another occasion to continue with their plan. After all, Barcelona is less than an hour from Girona, and they can come whenever they want.

As you can see, there are several museums you can visit in the city, each offering educational content based on the interest of each person. It is well worth getting to know them and enjoying their exhibitions.

We invite you to stay at our hostel and, like Lucía and Mar, get up without rushing to discover the city on foot. What better plan for a Sunday?
