The event will take place on September 6, 2024 in the San Narcis neighborhood
It will not be the first time that we bring the community together to take part in jam sessions that are much more than just musical gatherings. It is a space where we want to stimulate the creativity and improvisation of the community. Through amateur and professional musicians we bring together music lovers, with that special touch so that they can explore the instruments in an inspiring environment.
At CanCocollona accommodation, we are excited to announce our next jam session, which will take place in the San Narcís neighborhood, in Girona. This event is an opportunity for musicians and music lovers to get together, share their talent and enjoy a night full of improvised rhythms and melodies. And the best of all is that everyone is invited!
What is a Jam Session?
A jam session is an informal meeting between musicians where improvisation is the queen of the night. Unlike a traditional concert, where every note is planned, in a jam session, musicians create music in the moment, exploring new ideas and going with the energy of the group. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced guitarist, a novice drummer, or just someone who enjoys good jazz or blues; in a jam session, what matters most is the spontaneity and connection between the participants.
Where and how do jam sessions come about?
Jam sessions have their roots in the New Orleans jazz scene in the 1920s, and became popular in New York during the 1930s and 1940s. These sessions were a way for musicians, often after their regular performances, to get together to play without the pressure of a very demanding audience. The legendary Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem was one of the epicenters of these gatherings, where musicians such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie took improvisation to new heights, helping to develop the bebop style.
Over time, jam sessions expanded beyond jazz, finding a home in genres like blues, rock, and even electronic music. In all their forms, these sessions remain a space for experimentation and creativity.
